Lots to think about in this post. A couple of quick places to look for related ideas:
- graphing links between posts via trackbacks [ http://ouseful.open.ac.uk/blogarchive/014840.html ]

As well as graphviz, things like the JavaScript Information Visualization Toolkit (JIT) are quite handy for generating visualisations (eg http://ouseful.open.ac.uk/blogarchive/014544.html )

Too cool! Any suggestions for how-to sites for beginners? I love, love love the graphics & maps you have.

You're right. It's not scalable. You would end up creating some bottlenecks (specifically, at the Yahoo Pipes entrances) where you have to do custom coding or manual rendering of data or graphs.

I haven't found a set of freely available tools to do this, which is why I rely so heavily on grsshopper. I think each participant should have his or her own grsshopper. But the online applications aren't there yet.

My focus, therefore, would be mostly on facilitating communication, and less on analysis. Sure, collect what data you can, but really work on the aggregators to collect and distribute data. I'd be more likely to just code it - PHP has some aggregators, and as you suggest, the data can and should be stored for later analysis.

@Tony,

Well, this is a very unexpected visit, I have to say! Thanks for the suggestions, I'll look into them.

@Gina

I can't help to try and do those maps. I guess they help me to handle my own confusion! :D Now, are you interested in Pipes info (for beginners) or something different? I'm thinking that I should try and get together something to show how can you "clone" my set-up to do your own stuff...

@Stephen

Thanks for stopping by! You are right about the bottlenecks... I have to admit I'm even a little concerned about Pipes.. I mean, outsourcing the most critical part of the aggregation to a comercial service creates a clear risk...

Now, I agree with you that every participant should have his/her own grsshopper. But, given the experience I've had (at least in my context, where there are lots of people who haven't used a blog), I'd say that's quite ambitious. I wonder, anyway, if the online applications will ever be there...

I agree that communication is very important, but I think we need to explore analysis a bit more. I wonder if we're missing a lot of interesting things, that could actually show other possibilities to other teachers and administrators... We need (I'd say) tools to show alternatives to RSS, and the advantages of working in the open.

Thanks for your comments!
